Year 4 Trip to Roman Chester

Lesson: History

YEAR 4 Trip to Roman Chester & The Grosvenor Museum

Today all of the pupils in Year 4 visited Chester to learn more about and experience life as a Roman. The children had a fabulous day and spent part of it being a Roman soldier in the Ampitheatre and learning some Roman Centurion manoeuvres. The children enjoyed trying to attack using their Roman shields.

The children explored some Stories in Stone gallery where the children learned about some of the people who lived in the Roman fortress of Deva. The gallery included a display of Roman tombstones: a collection of international importance due to the fact that very few survive.

A visit to the Newstead Roman Gallery was also made. This gallery contained displays of Roman artefacts and archaeology. The children were able to begin to learn more about the day to day life of Romans in Deva.

The children also were fortunate to have an educational workshop within the museum to learn more about Roman Deva and associated artefacts from the period. They had a chance to interact with these. Finally they also learn a little more about the a Roman soldier’s uniform, shield and weapons.

The children had a superb day and their behaviour was excellent! Well done Year 4!
