Year 4 Reading

Steps to Read- Poetry Unit

During our group reading session, the children were studying an extract from a poem about the dark depths of the ocean.

At the start of this, we unpicked lots of the new, unfamiliar vocabulary by discussing the deep undersea world and its sea creatures. We discussed words such as: viperfish, fangtooth, anglerfish, and tube worms

To really help us understand the vocabulary in the context of the poem, the children were invited to freeze frame one of the sea creatures mentioned. The children were superb in managing to model their understanding using their bodies, facial and arm gestures.

This then allowed the children the answer our key anchor question: What impression does the write give of the Deep Sea?
