Viking Longboats and Practicing Catch
Lesson: Physical education
On Thursday we went outside to practice our throwing and catching skills. As we always do a warm up in PE, we decided to base our warm up around our topic of the Vikings. When I said sailors the children had to walk, as that is what sailors would do on a ship. If I said "Land Ahoy!" the children had to immediately stop, put their hands to their heads and look out to the horizon. However when I said "Man overboard!" the children had to practice their running and weaving skills as they sprinted in between their friends.
After this warm up we moved towards practicing our throwing and catching skills by partnering up and trying to catch as many throws as possible. To put our throwing skills in context we finished with some running faces with a twist. A metre before they reached the finish line, the children had to stop and sensibly throw the beanbag to the next person in their relay. Luckily as everyone was so intent on remembering how best to throw and catch, nobody realised I'd forgot to watch out for the winning team!
