Sound - Pitch and Vibration Investigation

Lesson: Science

4W investigated sound, pitch and vibration by carrying out a series of separate experiments.

The children attempted to make connections between what they observed and their existing knowledge about sound.

The activities included:

- examining the effect of dipping a vibrating tuning fork into water,

- beating a drum with rice on the skin and watching the effect of the vibration,

- tapping glass bottles containing different amounts of water and listening to the different pitch,

- blowing down long and short straws and listening to the change in pitch,

- plucking elastic bands of different thicknesses, and

- experiencing how the sound of a wire coat hangar being tapped can travel along string to ears.
