Class 4J - Personal Development

No Outsiders - The Flower

During the final week of the half term, the pupils in Year 4 studied the book, The Flower written by John Light as part of their Personal Development work on equality, diversity and respect . The children were asked to follow the story about Brigg who lives in a small, grey room in a large, grey city. When he finds a book in the library labelled 'Do Not Read', he cannot resist taking it home. In it, he comes upon pictures of bright, vibrant objects called flowers. He cannot find flowers anywhere in the city, but stumbles instead on a packet of seeds. This sets off a chain of events which bring about unexpected results, continuing to grow and bloom even on the last page.

The main learning intention was focused around asking questions, and to be able to show an understanding of the importance of choice linked to equality.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the reading of the picture book and followed this up with an activity in which one child (the guard) had to work out who(Brigg) was hiding the book whilst the others tried to discretely move it around from one child to another. The guard had four guesses. At the end of the activity the children were asked to reflect on the game and consider the following questions:

-Do you think that people living there are confident or unconfident? Why?
-What kind of world do we want to live in? Why?
-How can we make sure that children in our school ask questions and feel confident?
