Class 5J - Testing for the Best Thermal Insulator

Class 5J - Materials

This week, pupils in Class 5J were provided with a scientific investigation to design the best thermal insulator to use for keeping their lunch cool. The lesson started off with understanding the difference between thermal conductors and thermal insulators and the differences between these, and examples of these.

They were then set the task and had to identify the different variables, including working out which was the independent variable ( variable that is measured). Following lots of discussion, each group set up their test using one of the agreed materials. Each test was set up using fair testing. Predictions took place prior to testing.

The class set up a control to help compare the final results. Results were incredibly successful and were discussed.
