During our second lesson in this PSHE unit on responding to others and understanding the word empathy, the children were asked to get involved in a debating activity. Five children were selected as the neutral group and they became the judges and had to leave the classroom for a while whilst a debate topic was introduced and discussed. The children had to decide how they felt about a specific debating issue and then, together with their peers who agreed similarly, then had to make valid points to justify their decision. These were then fed back via a spokesperson for each group. The debate was a fantastic opportunity for children to express their opinions and for others' to empathise.
