DT Week in Class 4J-Designing and Making Roman Chariots

Lesson: History

DT WEEK -Class 4J-Designing and Making Roman Chariots

This week the pupils in Class 4J have been designing and making Roman Chariots as part of Design and Technology Week.

The children began by investigating a range of axles and wheels on toy cars. They drew the cars and began to label the parts : body, chassis, bonnet, axle and wheels. Following this, they then went on to begin researching aspects of Roman Entertainment and then specifically about Roman Chariots and racing. Having seen a number of images of Chariots, the children then went on to begin designing their own. They had to consider materials and methods etc prior to making the chariot.

As part of the making process, the pupils created a rectangular jinx frame from wooden strips and card triangles after measuring and sawing wooden strips. They then added in card struts for the axle dowel to be threaded through. Afterwards, they began to design the front body of the chariot and work out how to join these to the frame.

At the end of the week, the pupils were involved in the school’s Design Technology Showcase which they themselves prepared and then delivered.

A super and enjoyable DT Week!
